Frozen Balls

Frozen trees balls are never fun to deal with.  Off the frozen metal semi-trailer deck onto the frozen wood wagon then into the frozen ground.  I took this shot from the comfort of my heated car...supervisors get all the perks.  But when we got to the job it was workin' time.  3 of us got 28 trees planted in 5 hours in sub 20F temps...the harder you work the warmer it seems.

So sorry to Neas, DVM's, and Shell...something was really wrong with the picture. It was linked to a weird site. I had to pull the whole post to make it go away...including comments.

If you happen by again...please comment. ♥ Tami

Doggy...I'm the boss of all the balls 'round here. Ball Boss, I always wanted an official title. Better get my cards reprinted.

Far Side... Yes 'BIG' balls are a bit of a specialty here. These particular ones were 32". Sizable by any definition.

You can plant trees when it's freezing? Those do look like big balls, for sure!

Tami said...

Hayseed...yes...when trees get to that size and the ground is hard we auger the holes with a machine. Shape the sides w/shovels then put the trees in. We use bars to straighten the trees & pack/tamp the soil which the auger very nicely loosens. It's a project...but it definatley doable. The cut off is 25 trees...any less and it's just not worth it moo-laa wise. The little tree jobs have to wait till spring. We only dig what we can get planted same or next day this time of year.

Clear as mud?

Holy Dirty balls Batman! Hahaha Good for you, Although I wouldn't think this would be a ideal time of year to plant trees? I prefer tank top, shorts, WARM planting weather!

Boy, I learn something new daily! I did not know that you can plant in ice and snow.

LOL! Ball boss indeed... Very funny. I guess you have a lot of balls to juggle ... as they say! ;-)

Linda...You can plant till the ground is frozen...deep. Around here that is just starting to happen. And the last few years...really we could almost plant year round. I would not want to put any small container or perenials in the ground. They would heave up. But trees this big are not a problem.
